Our 4-Phase Game Plan (Completed in ~22 Months!)

Phase 1 Bulletproof Emergency Buffer
Goal: $75,000  •  Timeline: Months 1 to 5 (~4.8 months)
6 full months of complete living expenses set aside in cash. This creates total peace of mind for the whole family before taking on any big new ventures or construction projects.
Phase 2 Acquire $1M+ Business (10% SBA Down + Reserves)
Goal: $150,000  •  Timeline: Months 6 to 15 (~9.5 months)
Covers the SBA equity injection plus closing costs and reserves. SBA's 10% equity minimum is on the total project cost - about $105k on a ~$1.05M project - leaving ~$45k of the $150k for closing and reserves, and lenders can require more than the minimum. Buying a high-cash-flow, established business secures a powerful new stream of income into our household!
Assumptions Owner Economics with a GM Running Day-to-Day (Pre-Tax)
Every figure below is an illustrative PRE-TAX planning case - assumptions and estimates, not verified facts. SDE = Seller Discretionary Earnings (pre-tax owner earnings). Confirm against the actual business's financials and a real lender quote before buying.
Item Estimate & math
Target SDE (est.) ~$300k-$400k/yr. Assumes a 2.5-3.5x SDE multiple on the ~$1M purchase price. Base case: ~$333k/yr at a 3.0x multiple.
GM salary (est.) ~$90k-$120k/yr (base case $105k). The GM runs the day-to-day, so Hayden keeps his W-2 sales job - the $31,434/mo take-home above continues untouched.
SBA 7(a) debt service (est.) ~$11,770-$11,894/mo on ~$900k financed over a 10-year term ($1M purchase + ~$50k closing/working capital = ~$1.05M total project, less $150k cash). That is ~$141k-$143k/yr at ~9.75-10%. Sept 2026: Prime is 6.75% and SBA caps variable 7(a) loans over $350k at base + 3.0% (per sba.gov 7(a) terms); the actual rate is lender-specific. Base case: $900k @ 10% = $11,894/mo (~$142,700/yr).
NET TO FAMILY (est.) Base case: ~$85k/yr pre-tax (~$7,100/mo) = $333k SDE - $105k GM - ~$143k debt. Paired range, pre-tax: LOW ~$31k/yr ($300k SDE - $120k GM - ~$149k debt) to HIGH ~$176k/yr ($400k SDE - $90k GM - ~$134k debt).
Not included: transition costs, acquisition fees, capex, working-capital growth, taxes, or reinvestment. Distributions depend on lender covenants and operating reserves.
Why it matters (est., pre-tax): if the business cash is actually distributed to the family rather than reinvested (TBD), ~$7,100/mo stacks on top of the $15,791/mo W-2 surplus - roughly $23k/mo combined - which would pull Phase 3 and Phase 4 forward and supercharge the Month 23+ investing phase, all while the W-2 budget stays exactly as planned.
Phase 3 Our Dream Backyard Pool
Goal: $85,000  •  Timeline: Months 15 to 20 (~5.4 months)
Paid 100% in cash! Complete in-ground pool ready for the five kids to swim with friends, making incredible memories and cooling off during those warm Magnolia summers.
Phase 4 Custom Deck & Covered Patio
Goal: $25,000  •  Timeline: Months 20 to 22 (~1.6 months)
Ties the entire outdoor retreat together with shaded lounging and dining space—the absolute perfect spot for smoking salmon and pork tenderloin by the pool on the weekends.

The Next Chapter (2029–2030)

By Month 22 (less than 2 years in!), every single goal above is 100% funded and debt-free. Starting in Month 23, our entire +$15,791/month surplus rolls straight into long-term investments—meaning we'll be investing over $189,400 every single year ($410,000+ over the remaining 26 months), plus whatever cash distributions flow from our new business!
